What is Juvederm?
When considering injectable treatments, some patients choose to explore treatments that mimic our body’s natural components. Juvederm is one such treatment containing a colorless, stabilized hyaluronic acid gel. Hyaluronic acid is naturally found in your tissue, acting as a hydrator, volumizer and cell protector.
Juvederm has been in use for over a decade and is now a popular injectable to replace tissue structure and volume to correct moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds and nasolabial folds, as well as other areas. It is a biodegradable but long lasting injectable filler that uses hyaluronic acid to quickly replace lost volume in areas of the face.
In addition to correction of facial nasolabial folds, Juvederm is frequently used for
- Lip augmentation
- Filling marionette lines
- Temporarily correcting fine lines
- Various treatments for facial contouring
Juvederm treatments are available in two formulas—Juvederm Ultra XC, which is best for contouring and adding volume to facial folds and wrinkles, and Juvederm Ultra Plus XC, which is ideal for correcting and volumizing deeper facial folds and wrinkles.
What to Expect During Your Juvederm Injection
Your plastic surgeon will identify the proper injection site, which is then throughly cleansed with an antiseptic. Juvederm® is then carefully injected into and below the dermis using a special technique. For any pain, a topical anesthetic may be used, but Juvederm does contain lidocaine for that purpose.
After the treatment, you should be able to see the results, but for a time, the injection site may feel overly full. Patients are usually advised to avoid strenuous exercise, sun or heat exposure and alcohol for 24 hours as these may increase the chance of side effects such as temporary redness, swelling, and/or itching at the injection sites. Placing an ice pack over the injection site can help control any swelling.
Results can last anywhere from six to 12 months and touch-ups may be required, though a lower dosage of Juvederm® may be required at that time.
